This is one of Carrie’s creations – Grilled cheese with a new twist! The outsides of the bread are dipped in a scrambled egg mixed with Italian seasoning, basil and garlic to give it a French-toast consistency. The sandwich has cheddar cheese and a tomato slice in the center.

¼ cup milk
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1 tsp dried basil
1/8 tsp garlic powder
cheddar cheese, enough to cover bread with ¼-inch thickness
2 slices tomato, ¼-inch thick
4 slices bread
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together egg, milk, Italian seasoning, and basil.
- Heat up a large non-stick skillet over medium heat or use an electric non-stick skillet (they are usually square and have more room). Coat only the outside of each of the four slices of bread in the egg mixture and lay two of them egg side down in the skillet.
- On the two slices of bread in the skillet, lay down cheddar cheese with a tomato slice on top and then another layer of cheddar cheese. Sprinkle the garlic powder over the top. Cover the top of each bottom half of the sandwich with the two remaining slices of bread with the egg side facing the top.
- Cook until the underside starts turning brown (or desired doneness) and then flip the sandwich over to cook the other side. Cook again until bottom is starting to turn brown and until cheese is melted.
